What is the difference between a chiropractic adjustment and a spinal manipulation?

The terms chiropractic adjustments and spinal manipulations are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. Chiropractic adjustments are gentle, precise movements made to correct misalignments (vertebral subluxations) in the spine and improve overall function, tailored specifically to each individual’s needs. On the other hand, spinal manipulation is a broader term that refers to a variety of techniques used to increase overall (global/gross) movement in the spine.

Chiropractic adjustments are much more specific than manipulations and focus on ensuring proper nerve supply and optimal function rather than just influencing motion. During an adjustment, a chiropractor examines each segment of the spine to check for proper alignment and movement that may have related nerve involvement (vertebral subluxations). Although the body is designed to work perfectly, vertebral subluxations can and do occur, caused by both small repetitive micro-traumas and those big moment macro-traumas.

While many providers, including osteopaths and physical therapists, may perform a spinal manipulation, only licensed chiropractors are qualified to perform specific chiropractic adjustments. To become a licensed chiropractor an individual must complete a 4-year undergraduate program, complete a 3–4-year doctorate degree including a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, lab and clinical internship, pass a comprehensive 4-part board examination, and gain licensure through their state chiropractic board in whichever state they wish to practice. This specialized training equips chiropractors with expertise to ensure that each adjustment is tailored to your unique needs, promoting optimal health and wellness. This focus on GENTLE, SPECIFIC adjustments that improve nerve system function is why chiropractors can take care of any person with a spine, from an infant upward.

Spinal manipulations may not be appropriate for every spine or every person, BUT CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS can be tailored to any BODY. We take pride in the safety of our chiropractic adjustments, which are delivered in a nurturing and compassionate environment that feels like home. At Westwood Family Chiropractic, we empower our community to make informed choices about their health by choosing qualified chiropractors who prioritize patient-centered care, ensuring you feel supported and understood on your health journey.
